Dairy Baka — Holstein-Sahiwal Herd
The dairy operation is the centrepiece of the livestock spoke. Holstein-Sahiwal cross baka — a tropical dairy breed selected for Bicol's heat and humidity. Milking herd based at F. Simeon, grazing under coconut on rotational paddocks at Indanawa.
Fresh milk, pasteurised milk, kesong puti, yogurt — all produced from the herd and sold at the Merkado and Alijandro's Kambingan. Value-added dairy products made on-site or processed through our BFDC Farm Classic partnership in Pili.
Cold chain from paddock to counter: milking starts at 5am, milk goes straight into the cooling tank at 4 degrees C, then into the reefer van for transport to the Merkado counter and delivery runs. The chain does not break.
The herd is NDA supported — the National Dairy Authority's Starter Herd (STH) dispersal program provides foundation stock for qualified dairy operations. Government-backed, Cam Sur is an official NDA dairy development zone.
Bull calves are raised at Agrupacion pasture and finished for the Katayan — dairy baka producing both milk revenue and beef revenue from every animal born.
Dairy Kambing
Anglo-Nubian kambing — the quick-start dairy line. Kambing milk sells at 2-3x the price of baka milk. Kesong puti, chevre, feta-style cheese, yogurt — all premium products with strong local demand. Surplus bucks go to the Katayan for chevon.
Kambing breed fast and cost little to keep. The herd shares the milking facility with the baka — one pump, swap the cluster sets. Kambing dairy is already producing while the baka herd scales up.
The animals
Baka on the flatter far side of the land — long-term rotational grazing program. Baka for the Katayan, hides for local use, manure for the compost system.
Carabao — the working heart of the farm. Draft power, land management, cultural connection. A farm in Bicol without a carabao is not complete.
Rotational grazing
Animals rotate through paddocks on a strict schedule. Enough time to graze, enough time for land to recover. No paddock is overgrazed. The land stays productive. The animals stay healthy. The system sustains itself.
Baboy
Three days maximum rotation on any section, then long recovery. Baboy reset compacted ground and break weed cycles. Managed properly they are a land management tool as much as a livestock enterprise.
Integration with the wheel
Manure feeds the compost system. Compost feeds the gardens. Garden waste feeds the animals. The loop closes. Nothing leaves the farm that doesn't need to.
